Custom Wall Decals: How to Order a Made-to-Spec Design

Ready-made wall decals cover the vast majority of decorating needs — but sometimes your vision doesn’t fit neatly into a catalog. You want your child’s name in that specific font, at exactly 24 inches, in that specific shade of sage green. That’s what custom wall decals are for.

Here’s everything you need to know about ordering custom wall decals: when it makes sense, what the process looks like, what information to have ready, and what it actually costs.

When Does a Custom Decal Make Sense?

Custom makes sense when:

1. You need a specific name, word, or phrase.
The most common custom order is a name decal — a child’s name for a nursery, a family surname for an entryway, a business name for a storefront. Ready-made name decals exist, but they won’t have your specific name.

2. You have a specific size requirement.
Ready-made decals come in the sizes the designer chose. If you need a decal exactly 36 inches wide to fill a specific wall space, custom is the only option.

3. You need a specific color not available in the catalog.
Every custom order can be color-matched to your exact wall palette or brand colors.

4. You want a design based on a photo, logo, or illustration.
Baby photo converted to a line-art decal. Family portrait as a silhouette. Company logo for an office wall. These require custom production.

5. You’re ordering for commercial or event use.
Custom decals for storefronts, offices, event signage, trade show displays, or short-term installations are best ordered custom for exact size and brand accuracy.

When Ready-Made Is the Better Choice

Don’t order custom when a ready-made design already exists that matches your need. The advantages of catalog decals:
– Faster (ships within days vs. 1–2 weeks for custom)
– Significantly cheaper (no design fee)
– You can see exactly what you’re getting before buying

The Custom Order Process at DecalHouse

Step 1: Contact Us With Your Vision

Start by reaching out through our contact page or by emailing Sales@DecalHouse.com. Include:

  • What the decal should say or show (text, or a description of the design)
  • The size you need (width × height in inches)
  • The color(s) — Pantone code, hex code, or a description (“dusty sage green, similar to Sherwin-Williams Privilege Green”)
  • Where it will be applied (wall, window, tile, car, etc.)
  • Material preference (vinyl or fabric)
  • Any reference images if you have them

Step 2: Proof and Approval

Our design team creates a digital proof — a mockup of your decal at the specified size and color. You review it and request any changes (font adjustments, spacing, size tweaks). We don’t proceed to production until you’ve approved the proof in writing.

Typical turnaround for proof: 1–2 business days.

Step 3: Production

Once approved, your custom decal goes into production. Custom orders are printed and cut on the same equipment as our catalog products — same material quality, same edge finish.

Production time: 3–5 business days.

Step 4: Shipping

Custom orders ship via the same US shipping as standard orders. Standard shipping is free over a threshold; expedited is available. Total time from order to delivery: typically 7–10 business days.

What to Prepare Before You Order

Having this information ready makes the process faster and reduces back-and-forth:

Size: Measure your wall space. Account for furniture, outlets, and windows. A decal that fills 70–80% of a wall space typically looks most intentional — leaving some breathing room around the edges.

Color: The most precise way to communicate color is a hex code (for digital references) or a Pantone number (for print/physical references). If you’re matching to a paint color, look up your paint’s hex code on the brand’s website.

Font (for text decals): If you have a specific font in mind, name it or link to it. Google Fonts is a free source of popular typefaces. If you don’t have a preference, our team will suggest options based on your decal’s style.

File (for logo/photo decals): Provide the highest resolution version of your image. SVG or PDF vector files are ideal. High-resolution PNG or JPG (minimum 300 DPI at intended print size) also works. Low-resolution screenshots cannot be used.
